Man charged with child rape

MOUNT UNION — Canaan Lee Hess, 43, of Mount Union, was charged Monday with 10 criminal counts, including rape of a child, statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault and corruption of minors, stemming from several incidents involving a 5-year-old, according to court documents.

According to court documents, Pennsylvania State Police Huntingdon received a call on March 23 from a caseworker from Huntingdon County Children’s Services. The caseworker reported that a 5-year-old disclosed to a family member that Hess had allegedly performed various sexual acts with the alleged victim and forced the alleged victim to perform various sexual acts on him. An extensive interview was conducted with the alleged victim on April 4, during which the alleged victim described five incidents that allegedly took place from March 20 through March 21.

According to court documents, when police initially interviewed Hess regarding the complaint, Hess denied each incident. On Monday, when interviewed again by police, Hess said “everything the victim said was true,” and provided details that corroborated what the alleged victim had told police.

Hess was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Lisa Covert and is being held in Huntingdon County Prison, unable to post the $500,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 2.
