Farm Bureau hosts annual spring dinner

Bureau provides updates on recent events and activities

MILROY–The Mifflin County Farm Bureau held its spring dinner meeting on March 28 at the Milroy Presbyterian Church.

After a meal, President Tim Goss reported that Mifflin County reached its membership goal with 391 regular members. Mifflin County was the first in the region to reach its goal. Goss also reported on the Rural Road Safety event, which was held on April 14 at Penn Canal Farm in Belleville. Nationwide Insurance presented a program on road safety during the event.

Rebecca Harrop, Ag Promotion Chair for District 10, reported on the March Ag Promotion Conference that was attended by herself, Tina Goss and Sonieta Harrop from Mifflin County. All participants felt they brought back some valuable information. They were very impressed by the three Penn State University students who participated in a panel discussion on their perceptions of agriculture.

Harrop also reported that the Ag Literacy classroom book reading program was completed. Readers read “Tyler Makes Pancakes” to 26 classrooms in Mifflin County, which is more than last year’s program.

Later, Harrop reported that the Mifflin County YF&R committee will be having a booth at Kid Connection in Lewistown on April 28. They will have the Sheep Board from PFB for kids to get their picture taken and also some handouts for parents.

Mark Ellinger gave the Legislative Report, noting that last month PFB members from across the state were in Washington D.C. for a meeting with Pa. senators and representatives. On April 17, PFB members will be visiting state senators and representatives in Harrisburg. Tim Goss, Rebecca Harrop, Dave Mitchell, and Ellinger will be attending to represent Mifflin County.

Ellinger later announced that the Mifflin County Farm Bureau “Measure the Candidates” event will be held on May 2 at Mifflin County High School.

District 10 YF&R Chair Stacey Hann reported on the State YF&R activities, noting the YF&R picnic will be held on July 22 at Dotterer’s Dairy in Mill Hall.

District 10 WLC Chair Sonieta Harrop presented a Farm Crisis Preparedness Training program. The program went through the process of writing a plan geared to your own farming operation. Additionally, Harrop mentioned that applications for Outstanding Woman in Agriculture are now available–nominations are due to the county WLC’s by July 1.

Several candidates running for state representative for the 82nd District and 171st District seats were also present and were given the opportunity to introduce themselves.
