Don Smith, of Belleville, empties hunks of turkey meat into the cooking pot Monday in preparation for the meat to be cooked and canned at the 44th annual Central Pennsylvania World Hunger Association’s Meat Canning Project at East Derry Fire Company in Lewistown. This year, 34,000 pounds of turkey and 17,000 cans of meat will be canned, with 90 percent of the meat going to the Mennonite Central Committee for shipment to relief efforts around the world and 10 percent of the cans staying here for the area’s needy. Volunteers are needed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today through Thursday to help with the project at 1800 Glenwood Avenue, Lewistown.. Groups are encouraged to schedule times, but walk-ins are welcome and needed. To schedule a group, call Ben Stoltzfus at (814) 625-2430 or Jonathon Coldren at (717) 250-6840.
