Earn HACC credits in Lewistown

Enrollment for spring semester begins Nov. 13

LEWISTOWN — HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, is in Lewistown.

The community college based in Harrisburg is now offering a limited number of general education classes to local students through a combination of online and classroom instruction.

Jennifer Baar, dean of academic affairs at HACC’s Harrisburg campus, said Geisinger-Lewistown School of Nursing asked HACC to bring services to the area. Classes with nursing students have been underway for a short time, and the college is now ready to let the community know it’s here.

She and admissions counselor Michael Turi hosted an information session Wednesday evening in Lewistown.

New student enrollment for the spring semester, which begins in January, opens Nov. 13.

This spring, HACC will offer CIS 105, Intro to Software for Business, from 7 to 9:45 p.m., weekly on Thursday; BIOL 221, Microbiology, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., weekly on Monday and Wednesday; and BIOL 122, Anatomy and Physiology II, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., weekly on Tuesday and Thursday.

Admissions counselor Michael Turi said said now is the time to enroll.

University degrees are not worth what they used to be, he said. To be successful, individuals must match their skills and interests with the demands of the current job market.

“Community college is a great way to start,” he said.

HACC offers numerous associate degrees and certifications students can use to gain employment. Turi said HACC credits also transfer into universities like Penn State, Millersville and Shippensburg.

Like four-year universities, HACC offers honors programs, study abroad opportunities, clubs and organizations, sports and more.

The difference, Turi said, is that HACC is an open-enrollment college.

“If you fill out an application, you’re in,” he said.

Incoming students take placement tests to determine which classes they will start with. Those who do not test as college-ready are able to begin with classes that will bring them up to speed.

“We give everybody the opportunity to prove they can [be successful],” Turi said.
