Woodward fills Region 9 seat

JCSD board makes appointment with unanimous vote

MIFFLINTOWN — Lifelong Juniata County resident, Troy Woodward, was appointed Wednesday to the Juniata County School District Board of School Directors.

Woodward will represent Region 9, Lack and Tuscarora townships, for a term to conclude Dec. 4. The position has been vacant since the resignation of former Region 9 Director Erin Derr at the Aug. 17 meeting.

Woodward publicly fielded interview questions in front of the board during a workshop meeting held Wednesday evening at the district administrative office. Current directors asked about his background, experience, priorities and goals. Some questions focused specifically on elementary school consolidation, which Woodward had vocally opposed as it was proposed in the past.

Now that consolidation is underway, Woodward said, he wants to make sure the process continues as smoothly as possible. He vowed to look at consolidation-related items with a discerning eye and use his expertise in the construction industry to help the board move forward with its plan.

“Likemindedness never got anybody anywhere,” Woodward said, acknowledging his difference of opinion from the majority on some topics.

He said educated decisions are made by gathering and considering more information and listening to each other with an open mind.

Woodward stressed during his interview that the board and school administration must work hand-in-hand to identify and fix problems. Directors should consider the beliefs of their constituents, interest of students and needs of the district now and in the future.

After Woodward’s interview, the board entered a special voting meeting in which Director Joseph Shearer made a motion to approve Woodward as Region 9 director. Director Heather Kelly seconded his motion. In a unanimous vote, the board welcomed Woodward to the position.

Woodward was one of two applicants for the Region 9 seat. He was the only applicant in attendance at the meeting.

Directors Larry Rothrock and Danny Snyder were not present at the meeting.
