Volksmarch slated in Mifflin/Mifflintown

MIFFLINTOWN — The Susquehanna Rovers will conducting a “volksmarch” in Mifflintown starting at the Mifflintown Playground on Aug. 26 with registration between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. each day. The walk must be completed by 4 p.m.

The Susquehanna Rovers is a part of the American Volkssport Association (and the International Federation of Popular Sports. There are more than 600 clubs in the U.S. and hundreds more in many other countries.

Volkssporting is an organized uncompetitive sport that started in Germany in the 1960s and in the U.S. in 1976, brought home by returning military people. Since 1976, the sport has spread across the country.

The German term “volkssport” literally means a “sport of the people.” Anyone of any age may participate in walking (volksmarches). These events are not a contest of speed, rather each participant sets their own pace; and only needs to complete the event before the stated finish time — thus, everyone is a “winner.” You may also receive an award upon completion of the event by paying the proper fee at the registration. In addition, you may enroll in the International Achievement Award Program.

All participants receive a start card that must be stamped at control points along the route. While most clubs allow participation without charge, most individuals purchase the start card in order to enroll in the incentive program. Awards are earned by compiling unique stamps in record books, event record and distance record, which may also be purchased. Completion of the books entitles the individual to a certificate, hat pin and patch at no additional cost. There is no time limit for completing these books, which are accepted worldwide at any IVV member country.

The Mifflintown walk goes through the neighborhoods in Mifflintown and Mifflin, through a cemetery and nature trail, past the remodeled courthouse, and crosses both bridges between Mifflintown and Mifflin. A food stand supporting the Juniata County 4-H Square Dance Club will be available at the start/finish line of the walk. This, as well as all events, will be held rain or shine.

For further information, contact Joyce Krow at (717) 527-4798.
