Local fireworks exploding with extra funding for a longer show

Display to begin at 9:30 p.m. Saturday

LEWISTOWN –Saturday’s fireworks display in downtown Lewistown are expected to go off with a bigger bang than usual this year.

“I am pleased to announce that the Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce has exceeded our $9,000 fireworks goal,” Rhonda Moore, executive director of the chamber said on Tuesday.

“This year we will enjoy an $11,000 fireworks display, thanks to the many generous area sponsors,” Moore stated.

The chamber had the choice of putting the additional funds toward a bigger finale, or a show that will last longer than the usual one half hour. Already delighted with the finale at previous shows, Moore said the chamber opted for a longer show this year.

“The extra contributions will be used to extend the length of this year’s fireworks display,” Moore said. “Let’s celebrate Independence Day in the Juniata River Valley with a bang! “

As usual, the fireworks will be launched on the banks of the Juniata River, in the Mifflin County Industrial Development Corp. Plaza across the river from Victory Park. The show will begin at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. The rain date is Sunday.

Moore began soliciting funding for the display earlier this year, following in the footsteps of her predecessor at the chamber. She recalled the passion that the late Jim Tunall, the previous chamber executive director, had for the local fireworks display and his efforts to raise funds to keep it going.

Moore said she plans to include a complete list of those who donated in a letter to the editor after the event
