Yard sale to feature added celebration

Terrace prepares to commemorate 50th anniversary

JUNIATA TERRACE — The annual Juniata Terrace community yard sale will look a little different this year.

The Juniata Terrace Borough Council has announced a 50th anniversary celebration will occur on the same day, which will be June 10.

The event will be all day, not just during the 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. period when the yard sale typically occurs.

“We are looking to make it a daylong celebration,” Council President Douglas Kepner said.

Kepner said he has reached out to the pastor of the Lewistown Alliance Church to see if they would also be willing to participate.

“They are part of this community,” he said. “We want them to be involved.”

The idea is to have activities for kids and families in order to bring about a sense of community during the anniversary of the borough. Kepner added the day could include everything from Wiffle ball games to a hot dog roast.

The council, which is sponsoring the event is also looking to have a DJ play music.

“We are sponsoring it but we would love to have members of the community volunteer their time,” he added.

The borough is also seeking individuals with pictures of the borough throughout the years.

“We know some people have grown up and lived here their whole lives,” council member Susan Cozby said. “We want to show the history in a picture collage.”

Photos can be sent to the borough office at 80 Hudson Ave., Lewistown, PA 17044. Kepner said the photos will be returned if a return address is available. The photos can be dropped off at the office as well.

“We understand that some residents do not live here anymore, but may still want to share their memories,” he said. “That is why we want to show the history with pictures.”

Overall, the council wants the day to bring a sense of community back to the once close-knit factory town.

“This is a milestone and we want to celebrate,” Kepner said. “All are welcome.”
