Information given for activities at fair

LEWISTOWN –A Summer Youth Activity Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Mifflin County Library.

Local agencies will provide information on what activities, camps, bible schools, etc., there are for youth to participate in this summer. There will be prize drawings.

The event is sponsored by the library and Mifflin County Communities That Care.

Lunch sale to benefit Milroy Senior Center

MILROY — There will be a vegetable soup and bag lunch sale from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 26 at the Milroy Senior Center, 283 Broad St., Milroy.

The meal will include a bowl of soup, ham and cheese sandwich, chips and a cookie for $8; or a quart of vegetable soup is $5. Eat in or take out.

Grace church to host paint party Jan. 28

LEWISTOWN –There will be a Painting by Judy party at 10 a.m. on Jan. 28 at Grace United Methodist Church, 101 Logan St., Lewistown.

The cost is $35 per person.

Sacred Heart Gala to have 1950s theme

LEWISTOWN –The annual Sacred Heart School Gala will be held from 5 p.m. to midnight on Jan. 28 at the Lewistown Rec Park Community Center.

This year’s theme is the 1950s, and ’50s attire is welcome, but not required.

Tickets are $60.

BBBS fundraiser set for upcoming spring

LEWISTOWN — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Juniata Valley will hold its annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake fundraiser on April 8 at Lewistown Lanes.

Teams of four people will bowl for two hours during the time period of their choice, between 9 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. There is a $225 registration fee per team. Prizes will be awarded to teams with the highest fundraising.

Individuals who raise more than $100 will be entered into a raffle for adventure passes to local destinations.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses and non-bowlers, with levels ranging from $100 to $500.

To join the committee, sponsor the event or sign up to bowl, call 248-4034. Team registrations are due by March 3. Sponsorship agreements are due March 10.

Artwork sought for Youth Art Day 2017

NEWPORT –Students attending school or residing in Perry County are invited to submit artwork for Perry County Council of the Arts’ Youth Art Day. Entries are due on Feb. 14. Categories include dance, music, drama, visual art, video, poetry, essay, short story and graphic design. Visit www.perrycountyarts.org  for an application and full guidelines.

Youth Art Day is an annual showcase of visual art, music and literary talent from students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The event features a large student art exhibition, as well as food, live music, dance performances, readings of award-winning literature and demonstrating artists.

This year’s Youth Art Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 8 at Newport High School, 500 Caroline St., Newport. An awards ceremony will begin at 3:15 p.m.

The countywide youth art show is open to the public and offers a day filled with activities for audiences of all ages. Admission is $4 for adults and students are free.

Reserve now for trip to Boston, Cape Cod

LEWISTOWN — Reservations are now being taken for the fall trip sponsored by the Mifflin County Historical Society/Destination History.

The six-day trip to Boston and Cape Cod will take place from Sept. 24 to 29.

Highlights include: guided tour of Freedom Trail, Boston Common and Public Gardens, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Quincy Market, Old North Church, Faneuil Hall, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum; tour of Lexington and Concord, Buckman’s Tavern, Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum; Boston Duck Tour, JFK Library and Museum, Charlestown Navy Yard and USS Constitution Old Ironsides, US Constitution Visitor Center and Museum.

The trip will also include Cape Cod National Seashore, Provincetown, Cape Cod Dune Tour, Chatham and Chatham Light, Nausett and Three Sisters Light.

The price includes transportation and baggage handling (one bag per person); five nights lodging, five breakfasts, five dinners and one lunch; all admissions and entrance fees to attractions, tour guides and bus driver gratuities.

The cost for members is $1,195 double, and $1,615 single; non-members, $1,215 double, and $1,635 single. Pricing for a triple will be provided upon request. Half payment is required at the time of reservation, and the final payment is due on June 1.

Full refund will be made up to 30 days prior to the trip, unless there are unrecoverable deposits/expenses by terms and conditions of the tour vendors. If the cancellation is made within 30 days prior to departure, the cancellation fee is $10 per person, per travel day, plus any fees that cannot be recovered. Anyone who is not present on the day of the tour departure will not receive any refund. Information about purchasing trip cancellation insurance is available upon request. The insurance covers medical issues only.

Millerstown Lions plan card party

MILLERSTOWN –Plans have been finalized for the annual Pinochle card party sponsored by the Millerstown Lions Club in Millerstown.

The event will be held on March 4 at the Greenwood Elementary School, just off Route 17 East in Millerstown. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the party will begin at 6 p.m.

This annual event has been held by the Millerstown Lions for many years and is recognized as one of the most popular events of its kind in the area. Prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded to the winners and nearly everyone is guaranteed a prize.  In addition to the prizes given out, there is usually an auction of different items so players should come prepared to find some bargains during the auction.

Profits benefit Lions District 14T projects including sight, diabetes, Beacon Lodge, Leader Dog and many others.

The cost  is  $7 per person, which includes refreshments.

Spring Fling Craft Show held March 11

MILLERSTOWN —    The 25th  Annual Spring Fling Craft Show sponsored by Millerstown Community Success Inc. will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 11 in the Greenwood Elementary School along Route 17 in Millerstown. Doors will open at 7:45 a.m. to accommodate early shoppers.

More than 100 vendor spaces are available. Interested crafters may reserve  space by calling 589-3598.   Space is restricted to vendors who make their own crafts; no commercial vendors will be accepted.

A great variety of hand crafted merchandise, gifts and decorating items will be featured for sale.

The  annual event is planned each year to coincide with Easter, Mother’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and spring house cleaning and decorating.

Throughout the day, door prizes donated by the vendors will be given away to those who are present. Refreshments will also be sold throughout the day, including breakfast items and sandwiches, and admission is always free.

Historic battle topic of documentary

BOALSBURG — The documentary “You Enter Germany — Bloody Huertgen and the Siegfried Line” will be presented at 1:30 p.m. on March 18 at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg.

Between September 1944 and February 1945, 13 U.S. Army divisions fought for control of a 50 square mile area of dense forest along the German border. It was the longest single battle in American history and largest defeat of the U.S. Army in Europe.

This 2007 German production tells that story with veteran interviews and archival footage.
