Yarger appointed as new superintendent

MIFFLINTOWN – The Juniata County School District has a new superintendent.

Keith D. Yarger was appointed to the position Thursday evening during a meeting of the Board of School Directors. His contract, which remains effective Monday through Aug. 24, 2017, was approved during the meeting. Yarger’s annual salary is listed as $110,000.

Yarger has previously been the superintendent of Southern Tioga School District and was the acting superintendent and principal of the Northern York School District. He has also previously been a principal in the North Schuylkill School District. Yarger’s educational career started as a teacher in the Jersey Shore Area School District in Lycoming County.

At the same time Yarger joined the district, the board accepted the resignation of a former school board director. Melvin E. Brubaker Jr., who represented Region 3 (Delaware and Susquehanna townships), has his resignation approved with an effective date of July 18.

Brubaker had verbally resigned from the board before walking out of the board’s June 19 meeting.

Also during the meeting, the board:

Approved an increased student parking fee of $15.

Approved Michael Howard to perform water quality monitoring, reporting and consulting services for the district at an initial setup fee of $1,250; a quarterly fee of $400 for sampling and reporting; and a fee of $35 per hour for additional sampling, reporting and consulting.

Approved Long’s Excavation Inc. to perform excavation work associated with the installation of an underground propane tank at the Juniata High School building trades classroom. Cost of the project is $1,250. The board also approved the purchase and installation of a 1,000-gallon tank and 850 gallons of fuel from Suburban Propane, at a total cost of $4,491.97.

Approved financial reports for June and July and a listing of bills for payment.

Approved a revised district calendar to reflect an Act 80 day on Aug. 19 and in-service day on Aug. 20.

Approved a letter of agreement with The Meadows Psychiatric Center/Universal Community Behavioral Health to include educational services at an hourly rate of $30.

Approved Starview Media Inc. to broadcast varsity sporting events from East Juniata and Juniata high schools during the 2014-2015 school year.
