Roadwork planned in Lewistown

LEWISTOWN -On Tuesday Sept. 2 and Wednesday Sept. 3, trench restoration is planned on South Plaza Drive in Lewistown. This is the street that runs behind the CVS, Fitness Center, South Hills School and South Mall.

Borough maintenance workers will be milling out cold patch and placing asphalt.

Residents are asked to avoid the area during the work and to find an alternate way into the parking areas.

The work is dependent on the weather.

Lewistown holiday refuse collection

LEWISTOWN – The Borough of Lewistown is notifying borough refuse customers of changes to collection dates with the upcoming holiday.

Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 1. As a result, borough refuse routes scheduled for Monday will be picked up one day later on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

All other refuse routes will remain as scheduled.

Mondays recycling customers are reminded that their recycling materials are to be held until their next regularly scheduled recycling day on Sept. 15.

Participants will have the opportunity to improve math, reading and writing skills to prepare for the GED tests, training programs or employment. Businesses to close for Labor Day

LEWISTOWN – The following businesses are closed for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 1, 2014: TIU Community Education and Workforce Services; The Union Snyder Agency on Aging Inc. office and all of its senior centers; and The Call-A-Ride Service.

If anyone needs a ride from Call-A-Ride Service for Tuesday, Sept. 2, they must call CARS by Noon, Friday, Aug. 29.

Call schools for local homerooms

LEWISTOWN – Due to the increased use of electronic and other means of notification utilized by area school districts, The Sentinel will be discontinuing its annual publication of homeroom and bus assignments for local students.

Parents of students who have not received their assignments or have lost the information should call the school at which their child is enrolled.

Update Skyward before school starts

LEWISTOWN – Before the new school year begins, parents are reminded to update their contact information in Skyward, the messaging service utilized by the Mifflin County School District.

Vance Varner, district director of secondary education, said Skyward is used to send alert messages to parents in case of weather delays, early dismissals and emergencies.

To update Skyward, visit the MCSD website at Click on the picture link called “Family and Student Access.” Select “click here to continue to Skyward” and log in.

Parents who do not have login credentials for family access should contact the school office where their child is enrolled.

Sentinel customers warned of scam

LEWISTOWN – Customers placing classified ads in The Sentinel are asked to beware of individuals who are fraudulently seeking personal information over the telephone.

The Sentinel recently was advised by several customers that unidentified individuals contacted them seeking credit card and bank account information. The unidentified individuals were described as having a foreign accent when they spoke.

Sentinel customers are urged to use appropriate caution whenever providing personal information over the phone. Customers also are encouraged to confirm the identity of anyone claiming to represent The Sentinel before giving out any personal information by calling 248-6741.

Detour lifted at East Charles Street today

LEWISTOWN – The U.S. 22/322 westbound on-ramp at East Charles Street is now open to traffic.

The ramp closure had been in place since July 8.

During the month-long closure, crews made bridge repairs and worked on the permanent message board on westbound U.S. 22/322.

The completion of work on the bridge removes one bridge from Mifflin County’s list of structurally deficient bridges.

Single lane closures will remain on the main line through late August. After that, work will continue under daylight lane restrictions and signage through fall. Overall work will include concrete and deck repairs, painting, drainage improvements, guide rail updates, roadway milling and paving and miscellaneous work.

Food distribution to be held Aug. 16

McCOYSVILLE – The Juniata County Food Pantry will hold a distribution of food and other groceries for families who live at the west end of Juniata County from 10 to 11 a.m. Aug. 16 at McCoysville Presbyterian Church.

To be eligible for any Juniata County Food Pantry distribution, families must live in Juniata County, meet certain income guidelines and be referred by an authorized service agency or their local church. Families must contact the Food Pantry ahead of time if they wish to attend this distribution. For more information about eligibility or to sign up for the McCoysville distribution, contact the Juniata County Food Pantry at 436-9718.

Children’s drawings needed for paper

LEWISTOWN – The Sentinel is in need of weather-related art from local children to be used in the Kid Cast section of the daily weather page.

Drawings should depict rainy or stormy days and can be delivered to The Sentinel office at 352 Sixth St., Lewistown, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Information about the child – including their full name, age or grade, and the name of their school (if applicable) – should be written on the back of the drawing.
