Armagh holds first meeting in new township office
MILROY Some residents of Armagh Township were able to get their first look at the new township offices during a Monday afternoon meeting of the township supervisors.
Late in July, the township offices were moved to the former Armagh Elementary School, located at 283 Broad Street, Milroy. Prior to this move, several residents believed that the money spent for the building was a poor decision on the part of the supervisors, but plans moved ahead and now all meetings will be held at the new location.
Five residents at the meeting and one supervisor, Gregg Bitner, openly expressed concern about the meeting times being at 3:30 p.m. Those residents said, not only is it difficult, but impossible for some residents to attend because of the meeting time. Bitner made a motion prior to the end of the meeting to change the meeting time to 6 p.m., but the motion was not acted upon because neither Chairman Glen Boyer or Vice Chairman Mike Reed seconded the motion.
Resident Joe Lacombe spoke to the board and residents about his concerns over a letter he read about the new walking track in the township.
“This track is something that was needed,” Lacombe said. “People who were walking in town had to share the road with vehicles and buggies. My understanding is that it was done completely by volunteers with donated materials, which meant the township only paid for the fuel to run some of the equipment.”
Lacombe said the only other walking track in the township is owned by Phillips and is private property for the use of their employees only.
In other business, Reed proposed that another police officer be hired to the Armagh Township Police Department. He said, because the department is in need of another officer and because they are currently under budget, it would be better overall for the community. Reed said since the township separated from the Mifflin County Regional Police Department last year, it has saved the township money. When asked how much money it has saved, no clear answer was able to be given but it was decided to have a recesed meeting where actual numbers will be discussed.
The next meeting of the Armagh Township Board of Supervisors will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 14 at the Armagh Township Office now located at 283 Broad Street, Milroy. The meeting will be held to discuss the police department and possible litigation with a local business complex.
