Board transfers pension funds

YEAGERTOWN – Some of the funding recently set aside for Mifflin County Regional Police Department pensions has now been earmarked to reimburse Derry Township.

That decision came during the MCRPD Board of Directors meeting Thursday evening, when the directors voted to transfer $152,000 from the pension fund to the police department’s general fund. The board authorized that transfer from the $440,000 pension fund set up at Kish Bank to receive money previously owed by Lewistown Borough.

In 2013, with the expectation the borough would pay the money owed, Derry Township provided $152,000 needed for the pension fund until the Lewistown money was available.

On April 24, the board of directors voted to allow the department to enter into the pension payment plan with the borough of Lewistown.

The agreement severed the last formal tie between Lewistown Borough and MCRPD, nearly four years after the borough voted to end its relationship with MCRPD in the summer of 2010 to form its own police department. Lewistown Police Department took over police service for the borough from MCRPD on Jan. 1, 2011.
