Commissioners recognize Workcamp

MIFFLINTOWN – The Juniata County Commissioners on Tuesday recognized Workcamp 2014, a multi-denominational mission program set to be held from June 22-28 in Juniata County.

Bradley Kerstetter, county planning director, spoke on behalf of the workcamp’s organizational committee during a March meeting of the board of commissioners. He said the program provides free home repair countywide to people in need. Services, including porch and wheelchair ramp construction, interior and exterior painting, weatherization and other general maintenance, will be performed by about 400 teen and adult volunteers.

On Tuesday, the board issued Proclamation No. 2014-4 in support of the effort, which is being sponsored by Group Cares Foundation and St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Mifflintown. According to the document, more than 6 million hours of volunteer service have been provided to people in need nationwide since Group Cares’ inception in 1977.

“The greater Mifflintown area, including all of Juniata County, has welcomed these young people and the helping hands of countless numbers of adult volunteers who strengthen our community and lift a burden of many deserving residents,” said Commissioner Jeffrey Zimmerman, reading the proclamation. “The home repairs you provided to disabled, elderly and other qualified residents are greatly appreciated.”

Mindy Musser, program volunteer, said a number of local businesses and civic groups are offering donations or discounted meals and tourist attractions to visiting volunteers.

“It’s taken a community to do it,” she said.

Also during the meeting, the commissioners:
