Arts Council has full lineup of summer workshops

LEWISTOWN – The Mifflin Juniata Arts Council’s Summer Workshop schedule includes a variety of topics for the public.

All workshops are held at Gallery 3West in the former Montgomery Ward Building on Monument Square. Payment will be accepted at the workshop, but participants must RSVP so plan can be made for supplies.

The workshop schedule includes:

Artist Trading Cards with Jenny Barron Landis, 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, $5 per person

This is a one-part, hands-on workshop. Artist Trading Cards are one-of-a-kind works of art limited to the size of a regulation playing card. Every kind of medium can be used, from paints to markers to collage papers and more and theme ideas are endless. All materials will be provided, but participants may bring their favorite tools or your own materials.

Reverse Dying with Staci Van Art, 7 to 9 p.m., June 24 and 26, $10 per person.

This is a two-part, hands-on workshop. Participants will learn to create unique T-shirt designs. During the first session, participants will create stencils for their designs. During the second session, participants will use the stencils to create reverse dyed T-shirts. Bring one or more colored T-shirts. Plain colored T-shirts with no designs work best. All other materials will be provided by MJAC.

Mold-Making with Bryson Wagner, 7 to 9 p.m., July 10 and 17, $20 per person.

This two-part workshop is back by popular demand. Wagner will teach participants how to create a sculpted positive, and then a negative mold from which they can create several duplicates. Wagner works with a variety of materials, including silicone and PVC. All materials will be provided.

Writing with Shane Niman, 7 to 9 p.m., July 24 and 31, $20 per person.

This is another workshop that is back by popular demand. Participants should bring a pen or pencil and a notebook.

Knit a Dishcloth with Staci Van Art, 7 to 9 p.m., Aug. 7 and 14, $20 per person.

This is workshop is for ages 10 and older. Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. This two-part workshop is a great for moms and daughters to learn a new hobby together, but single adults are welcome to attend. Van Art will teach participants to cast on, use the knit and purl stitches, create yarn-over increases, and k2tog decreases to make a simple dishcloth. All materials will be provided.

Goldleaf with Bryson Wagner, 6:30 to 9 p.m., Aug. 21, $10 per person.

Wagner will teach us this very beautiful and delicate gilding technique that has been used in sculpture and manuscripts for hundreds of years. All materials will be provided.

Writing with Shane Niman, 7 to 9 p.m., Aug. 28, $10 per person

This is a one-part workshop. The specific topic will be announced at a later date. Bring a pen or pencil and a notebook.

Drawing with Ray Pilarski, 7 to 9 p.m., Sept. 4 and 11, $20 per person.

This is another workshop that routinely sells out. Pilarski leads participants through a series of fun exercises designed to help them to see shapes, light, shadow, texture and everything around them a little differently. Bring a pencil.

Welding with Bryson Wagner, 7 to 9 p.m., Sept. 25, $10 per person.

This one-part workshop will be held if the weather cooperates, as it must be held outside. Wagner will show participants several welding techniques that artists can apply to metal sculpture. Bring a pair of dark sunglasses.
