Leister honored with Good Scout Award
LEWISTOWN – Samuel Leister was honored Thursday at the Shawnee District, Juniata Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America’s annual Good Scout Dinner.
Paul Grego, Shawnee District Chairman, said he was happy to present the award to Leister.
“I have the distinct pleasure of awarding the award to Sam. What a great guy,” he said.
Leister has been involved in the Boy Scouts since he first became a member of Pack 120 in Mifflin. He said scouting is a good way to become ready for challenges.
“Scouting prepares you for life and teaches what you can do if you truly want to,” he said.
Leister recalls a time when his scout leader taught him tricks to keep his firewood dry, and said years later he was able to put that knowledge to use in another situation.
“In March of 2012 a friend and I were in Tennessee at a re-enactment and it was pouring rain. We used the same trick I used to keep the kindle dry,” he said.
Leister had many friends and family in attendance, and he made sure to thank his wife more than 40 years, Linda.
“She’s been so supportive of everything I get myself into. I have a habit of not being able to say no, “he said.
Joseph Strigle, the Juniata Valley Council President, also had kind words for Leister.
“I would like to thank Sam for all he has done for scouting and the community,” he said.
Leister is currently the president of the Mifflintown Lions Club, sits on the board of the Juniata County Historical Society and the board of Thrivent Financial. He is also the Webelos Den Leader for Pack 60 in Mifflintown.
