Community forum on budget set for May 29

LEWISTOWN – Even though the Mifflin County School District Board of Directors is scheduled to vote on the tentative 2014-15 general fund budget Thursday night, Superintendent James Estep is planning to conduct a community forum to allow for feedback on the proposed spending plan, which is slated for final adoption at the end of June.

Estep said he is planning to hold an open budget session at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, in the auditorium of the Mifflin County Middle School (the former Lewistown High School).

“Several members of the board have come to me and said, ‘since you’re proposing an increase in taxes, let’s go the extra mile and invite the public to show how we arrived at the budget we are proposing,”‘ Estep said.

Thursday’s vote will be for a tentative budget that increases real estate taxes by 8.1 percent for 2015.

“We want to give (the public) one more opportunity to express any concerns they may have,” Estep stated. “It’s one more turn for the public to hear how we came to the budget that we did.”

Chief Financial Officer Sean Daubert added, “This budget (vote on Thursday) is just proposed. Final adoption doesn’t happen until June.”
