Embassy Fair offers Kid Connection deal

LEWISTOWN -The Embassy Fair, featuring a variety of rides, food and games, continues at Kish Park until Saturday.

All entertainment is free, as is entry to the fairgrounds.

On Saturday, during Kid Connection, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in downtown Lewistown, stop by the Embassy for special matinee wristbands for the Embassy Fair at Kish Park. Ride all you want from 2 to 5 p.m. for only $6, a reduction of $10 from the normal price. To get this price, you must purchase the wristbands at the theatre before 2 p.m. During the matinee, the wristbands are $7. Evening wristbands (6 p.m. to close) are $16.

Indian Valley to host first talent showcase

LEWISTOWN -The Indian Valley Home and School will hold the first Indian Valley Elementary Talent Show at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Mifflin County High School.

This show will provide students the opportunity to show off their talents.

Admission is $5, and event DVDs will be available for $10.

to host ‘Da Capo’

STATE COLLEGE -The tones of a capella singing will fill the State College High School North Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, when the Nittany Knights Barbershop Chorus present their spring show “Searching for Love.”

Radio personality Ruth O’Brien will be the guest hose, and the quartet “Da Capo” will also appear. Da Capo is an award-winning vocal quartet from the greater Washington D.C. area. They have a passion for the history of vocal harmony and their songs range from the early 1900s to songs on the radio today.

The Knights In House Quartets will sing favorite love songs in four part harmony.

Ticket are $14 for adults and $7 for students, or for groups of 10 or more, adults are $14 and students are $6. Tickets can be purchased from any chorus member or at the door the night of the performance.

The Nittany Knights were first chartered in 1962. They belong to the Barbershop Harmony Society, an international, non-profit organization that provides an opportunity for men to gather to practice the barbershop style of acappella music.

Isle of Que to be topic for speaker

MIDDLEBURG -Cate Hastings, of Susquehanna University, will speak at the Snyder County Historical Society about the Isle of Que.

The lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. on April 29 at the historical society’s building at 30 E. Market St., Middleburg.

The Isle of Que is the most easterly part of Snyder County and is now a peninsula. Hastings’ program considers how and why its topography was changed from an island to a peninsula by builders in the 1820s and 1830s.

Wine with Warhol 2 to be held on May 2

LEWISTOWN -The Mifflin Juniata Arts Council’s first Wine with Warhol event was such a success that they are offering it again in May.

More “experience” than workshop, these types of events are becoming increasingly popular in larger communities at pubs, wineries and private parties. The MJAC decided to offer it at Gallery 3West, and the first event sold out quickly. Thirty people attended the first Wine with Warhol and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

The arts council provides canvases, paints, brushes, and snacks, while participants, who must be at least 21 years of age, bring their favorite wine. After some instruction and a brief an overview of the featured artist and his or her styles, participants are encouraged to create their own versions of a work by that artist. At Wine with Warhol, participants learn about native Pittsburgher Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement, and the featured work is Warhol’s Daisy. Other artists and styles will be featured at future events.

Arts council members Nancy Aurand, Angela Niman and Staci Van Art will host Wine with Warhol 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 2 at Gallery 3West. Tickets are $30 per person and proceeds will benefit MJAC. Logan Guards 5K Run is set for May 3

LEWISTOWN – The Mifflin County Historical Society and the Juniata Valley Striders have teamed up to sponsor the third annual Logan Guards 5K Run/Walk for Lincoln at 9 a.m. on May 3.

The start and finish lines will be near the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Lewistown, which contains a stone from President Abraham Lincoln’s tomb. Mifflin County’s Logan Guards were the first to answer Lincoln’s call for volunteers in 1861.

Registration on the day of the race starts at 7:30 a.m. The entry fee is $20 for adults and $15 for age 13 and younger.

LEWISTOWN -The Stone Arch Players of Lewistown will present “And Evermore Shall Be So, ” a murder mystery by Norman Robbins, directed by Colette Hartzler, as the spring production of their 2013-2014 community theater season at the Theatre-in-the-Park, Kish Park.

Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, May 16-17, 23-24, 30-31 and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, May 25 and June 1. Admission to all performances is $10.

Embassy Fair to open on Friday

LEWISTOWN – The Embassy Fair opens at 6 p.m. Friday at Kish Park, with a variety of rides, food and games.

Entertainment for the evening will begin with the “Jock-ular Juggler,” Bob Nickerson. He will stroll the fairgrounds for a while, then go on stage with a comedy show.

On Saturday, kids age 2 to 12 may participate in a free Easter Egg hunt at noon, sponsored by Bartlebaugh Amusements. Special prizes will be contained in some of the eggs.

At 1 p.m., the fair will open for a special Easter weekend matinee. After a break from 5 to 6 p.m., the evening show will feature The Sinceres on stage. The Sinceres are a group of ladies who sing standard and timeless tunes.

In recognition of Easter, the fair will be closed Sunday. It will reopen at 6 p.m. Monday.

All entertainment is free, as is entry to the fairgrounds.

The performances are supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by Pennsylvania’s General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Community Partnerships Resource Conservation and Development Council administer PPA in this region.

Book sale set for historic courthouse

LEWISTOWN – The Mifflin County Historical Society will hold a book sale from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 23, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 24, in the second floor Community Room of the Historic Mifflin County Courthouse, 1 W. Market St., Lewistown.

Some of the books for sale will include, but are not limited to: historical society publications; world, American, Mifflin County and Pennsylvania histories; genealogies; high school yearbooks; magazines; and various other subjects.

All sales are on a first-come basis and must be cash-and-carry. No books may be reserved prior to the sale. Book sets may not be broken.

An elevator to the second floor is available off the first floor hall.

Easter Bunny trolley will run on Saturday

ROCKHILL FURNACE -Children can meet the Easter Bunny while taking a ride aboard a historic trolley car on Saturday.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with face painting and crafts. There is a fee for the trolley ride.

In order to prepare for the special day and opening day of regular operations on May 24, groups of students from the Mount Union Area High School’s National Honor Society visited the trolley museum on April 5 and 6 to help clean the trolleys, pavilion and promote upcoming events.

BMS to hold 49th annual auction

BELLEVILLE – The 49th annual auction to benefit Belleville Mennonite School is Friday and Saturday at the school.

A traditional turkey and ham dinner will kick off the event from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. Children’s activities are scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m., and the gift certificate auction at 6 p.m.

Breakfast will be served from 6:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday. Children’s activities are set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and lunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The outdoor auction will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, and the quilt auction will begin at 1:30 p.m. the same day.

5K planned by Juniata County BPW

MIFFLINTOWN – The Juniata County Business and Professional Women’s Club, supported by Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital and the Juniata Valley Striders running club, will host the 4th annual Wellness 5K Event on Saturday at Cedar Grove Church in Mifflintown.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the race starts at 10 a.m.

The course is a 5km (3.1 mile) wheel-measured course, beginning and ending at Cedar Grove Church. Race day entry fees are $20 for adults and $15 for students. To register in advance, send an email to juniatacountybpw@yahoo.com, or find the event at www.active.com.

LEWISTOWN -The 18th annual Embassy Fair will be held from April 18 to 26 at Kish Park, featuring a midway by Bartlebaugh Amusements.

Hours are: 6 to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 6 to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday; 2 to 5 p.m., Saturday afternoons, including the Kid Connection matinee on April 26. The fair will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 20.

Belleville antiques show begins Friday

BELLEVILLE -The Belleville Civic Club’s 44th Antiques Show and Sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Belleville Community Hall. Donation is $3.

Series continues with Mountain Fling

LEWISTOWN – Mountain Fling will perform Friday and Saturday at the Mini Mountain Laurel Concert Series in Lewistown and Newport.

They will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main St., Lewistown, and at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, at Highland United Presbyterian Church, 11 Church Road, Newport.

All concerts are free and open to the public. A free will offering will be accepted at the door.

Mountain Fling hails from Southwest Virginia and adds music from the recent past to its traditional old-time material from a variety of sources. Band members Kathie Hollandsworth, Ed Ogle, Jim Lloyd and John Hollandsworth play instruments that were an important part of the pre-World War II mix but are now a little “to one side” of the usual old-time string band. Among the four, they play (and teach) autoharp, guitar, banjo, bass, hammered dulcimer, harmonica, and fiddle, and they sing.

In addition, a three-hour instructional autoharp workshop will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, at Orthey Instruments in Newport. All levels are welcome. The cost is $20. To reserve a space, call George Orthey at 567-6406 or 567-9469.

Wet walk slated at Little Buffalo park

NEWPORT-There will be a “wet walk” Tuesday at Little Buffalo State Park, in which participants will listen and look for wood frogs chirping and quacking like ducks.

Waterproof boots are recommended. Meet at the small parking lot on Little Buffalo Road at the extreme western part of the park.

LEWISTOWN -Open auditions for the River Valley Idol Singing Competition will continue from 4 to 7 p.m. on April 9 at Juniata Valley Winery, Route 35, Mifflin.

All auditions will be performed a cappella, without musical accompaniment. Twenty semi-finalists will be selected to perform on stage at the Embassy Fair in Kish Park on April 23. These performances will be accompanied by a sound track provided by the contestant, as will the finals to be held at the Mifflin-Juniata Arts Festival on May 17.

Jay Smar to appear at spring banquet

LEWISTOWN – Folk musician Jay Smar will be the guest presenter at the Mifflin County Historical Society’s spring banquet, to be held at 6 p.m. on April 10 the Penn Valley Christian Retreat on the Ferguson Valley Road

The menu is a family-style roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings. The cost is $14 for members and $15 for nonmembers; children ages 4 to 10 are half price.

BMS to hold 49th annual auction

BELLEVILLE – The 49th annual auction to benefit Belleville Mennonite School is set to be held April 11 and12 at the school.

A traditional turkey and ham dinner will kick off the event from 4 to 7 p.m. April 11. Children’s activities are scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m., and the gift certificate auction at 6 p.m.

Breakfast will be served from 6:30 to 10 a.m. April 12. Children’s activities are set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and lunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The outdoor auction is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. April 12, and the quilt auction is set to begin at 1:30 a.m. the same day.

The event will feature a variety of homemade food, baked goods and unique merchandise donated by auction sponsors, community organizations and area residents. Proceeds benefit BMS.

5K event planned by Juniata County BPW

MIFFLINTOWN – The Juniata County Business and Professional Women’s Club, supported by Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital and the Juniata Valley Striders running club, will host the 4th annual Wellness 5K Event on April 12 at Cedar Grove Church in Mifflintown.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the race starts at 10 a.m.

The course is a 5km (3.1 mile) wheel-measured course, beginning and ending at Cedar Grove Church. Prizes will be given to the fastest overall male and female runners, as well as the top three male and female finishers in each of seven age groups.

Race day entry fees are $20 for adults and $15 for students; the registration fees prior to March 25 are $15 for adults and $10 for students. All early-bird registrants are guaranteed an event T-shirt and goodie bag; limited quantities will be available on race day.

Big Band Sound to perform at festival

MOUNT UNION -The Big Band Sound Inc., of Mount Union, has been selected as one of the featured groups to perform at the 2014 Les Brown Big Band Weekend in Tower City on April 12.

This is the ninth annual weekend festival held in honor of Les Brown, the director of the Band of Renown, by his hometown. The location for this year’s event is the Williams Valley High School, 10300 Route 209, Tower City.

The Weekend Festival will provide a Friday evening dance and a full day Saturday of big band music beginning noon and continuing until 6:30 p.m.

The Big Band Sound is scheduled to perform two sets, from 4:15 to 5 p.m. and and from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m.

Band’s first concert to benefit library

LEWISTOWN -The Friends of the Mifflin County Library will present the Lewistown Community Band’s first concert of the season at 7 p.m. on April 24 at Mifflin County Middle School (formerly Lewistown Area High School).

The concert is being held for the second year to raise money for the library. The concert is free, and donations will be accepted.

The emcee will be Jim Tunall of the Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau, and Library Director Molly Kinney will speak during intermission. Retired employees of the Mifflin County School District will serve as ushers.

Logan Guards 5K Run is set for May 3

LEWISTOWN – The Mifflin County Historical Society and the Juniata Valley Striders have teamed up to sponsor the third annual Logan Guards 5K Run/Walk for Lincoln at 9 a.m. on May 3.

The start and finish lines will be near the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Lewistown, which contains a stone from President Abraham Lincoln’s tomb. Mifflin County’s Logan Guards were the first to answer Lincoln’s call for volunteers in 1861.

Registration on the day of the race starts at 7:30 a.m. The entry fee is $15 if preregistered by April 23, or $20 on race day. To encourage families to participate in the 5K, the entry fee is $10 in advance and $15 on race day for those ages 13 and younger.

Applications for Vet Queen are available

MIFFLINTOWN – Applications for candidates for the 2014-15 Juniata County Veterans Queen are now available at Juniata, East Juniata and Greenwood high schools and Juniata Mennonite School.

The contest includes a $1,000 “Sissy York” Scholarship award.

Interested female juniors should contact the guidance counselor at their school for an application. Completed applications should be mailed to: Juniata County Veterans Council, P.O. Box 1, Mifflintown, PA 17059.
