Sacred Heart to hold 16th annual benefit auction

LEWISTOWN – The 16th annual “More than an Auction,” benefitting Sacred Heart School and Parish, is set to run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 27 at the Mifflin County Youth Park in Reedsville.

Sue Parzanese, SHS director of finance and development, said the auction committee offered a new sponsorship program this year. Sponsors helped fund big-ticket items, including the new X-Box One gaming system, an autographed and authenticated Troy Polamalu football jersey and tickets to the Sprint Cup Series Nascar race at Dover Downs.

Children’s activities are also new this year, including a bounce house, dunk tank, face painting, pony rides and more. Tickets for the games will be $.25 each and most games will cost less than five tickets each.

“Our private schools enhance our community,” Parzanese said. “It’s really an investment in the future of our local community and the world.”

Each class of students at the school helped create class projects to sell at the auction. Projects and the grade behind them include: “Caterpillar Flower Box,” kindergarten; “Canvas Birds of a Feather,” first grade; “Circular Table Runner,” second grade; “School Spirit Quilt,” third grade; “Christ-Centered Canvas Mosaic,” fourth grade and “Recipe Book, Apron and Pie Dish,” fifth grade.

Other featured items include two pre-season Steelers football tickets, Notre Dame and Penn State University sports memorabilia, a rifle scope and a pool table. Many gift certificates, baskets and items from other local business donors and sponsors also will be auctioned.

A concession stand will sell barbecue chicken, international cuisine, hot dogs, french fries, fresh fruit cups, chips/pretzels and beverages.

“Private schools don’t receive much funding from the state or federal government,” Parzanese explained. “The money we need to operate the school comes from these kinds of events.”

A preview of auction items is set for 11 a.m. April 27 at the park. The silent auction will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m, and the oral auction is set for 1 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine and guests are encouraged to bring a chair.
