Leister to win scout award
LEWISTOWN – The Boy Scouts of America, Shawnee District, announced that Samuel Leister, of Licking Creek will receive the 2014 Good Scout Award at a kickoff event held Thursday at classroom 4 of Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital.
Leister said he was taken aback with the news.
“I was very surprised. I had a phone call and I hung up and it was like, ‘did they say what I thought they said?’ It didn’t really sink in until Dave (Blehi) called me the next day,” he said.
After the shock wore off Leister said he was honored to find out he would be receiving the award.
“It’s humbling. It’s quite an honor. I don’t feel ready because I’m not done volunteering and doing community work with kids,” he said.
Leister is the second member of his family to receive the award. His uncle Llyod Showers received the award in 1984.
Dave Blehi, executive director of the Shawnee District said Leister was chosen by a committee of volunteer to receive the award, and said they admired Leister’s continued active role in the community.
“His name was chosen above all because of his involvement in the community. He retired from the Juniata County School District after 36 years, is president of the Mifflintown Lions Club, and a fantastic registered leader with Cub Scout pack 60,” he said.
Leister is also on the board of directors on the Juniata Historical Society, is a board member of the Juniata County Re-enactors Association and a part of many other organizations. He is also enrolled in the Lay Ministry Institute which will certify him to be a part-time pastor.
The kickoff dinner also provided an opportunity for volunteers to organize the invitations to the annual dinner. The Good Scout Dinner will take place at 6 p.m., May 15 at Moose Family Center in Lewistown. The cost to attend to event is $100 per person or $150 per couple.
