Logan Guard 5K to benefit historical society

From staff reports

LEWISTOWN – The Mifflin County Historical Society and the Juniata Valley Striders have teamed up to sponsor the third annual Logan Guards 5K Run/Walk for Lincoln at 9 a.m. on May 3.

The start and finish lines will be near the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Lewistown, which contains a stone from President Abraham Lincoln’s tomb. Mifflin County’s Logan Guards were the first to answer Lincoln’s call for volunteers in 1861.

“We are looking forward to offering another great 5K this spring,” said Harvey Eckert, president of the historical society.

He was one of the 5K’s original organizers in 2012, believing the event would be opportunity to raise funds for the historical society and promote fitness in the community. Eckert has handed over the chairmanship to Richard “Bob” Wilcher, also an active member of the local amateur radio club.

“I am happy to chosen to be the chairman of the committee for this year’s Logan Guards 5K Run/Walk for Lincoln,” he said. “We are planning to add some additional awards for the participants.”

About 60 runners/walkers participated in 2013, with Jeff Miller the first male and Mary Batdorf the first female to cross the finish line. Katherine Costa, at the age of 93, walked the five kilometers.

Registration on the day of the race starts at 7:30 a.m. The entry fee is $15 if preregistered by April 23, or $20 on race day. To encourage families to participate in the 5K, the entry fee is $10 in advance and $15 on race day for those ages 13 and younger.

Trophies will be awarded to the top overall male and female finishers, as well as medals to the top three in each age group, including: Women – 10 and under, 11-13, 14-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50 and older; Men – 10 and under, 11-13, 14-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 and older.

Participation ribbons will be awarded to walkers.

The 5K chair is encouraged by the number of sponsors who already agreed to give their support again this year. The names of sponsors for the 5K Run/Walk will be placed on the back of the T-shirts. Sponsorships are $100.

This year’s T-shirts, which will be blue with white lettering, will again feature the special logo of a jogging President Abraham Lincoln designed by Mifflin County artist Tim Reeder. Runners and walkers who register by April 23 will be guaranteed a T-shirt. A limited number of T-shirts will be available to those who register on the day of the race.

“The majority of the proceeds will be used for the maintenance of the McCoy House, which houses many community treasures, and to promote other community activities for our historical society,” Wilcher said. Although the state owns the Lewistown museum, which is operated by the historical society, state funds to maintain it have been cut.

Registration forms for the 5K are available at the historical society office in the Historic Mifflin County Courthouse, Falkner Technologies, Market Street, Lewistown, the Lewistown branch of the Mifflin County Library and Mifflin County High School. Forms may be downloaded from the Juniata Valley Striders and historical society Facebook pages.
