NWS: Extreme cold on tap for area early next week
LEWISTOWN – The National Weather Service State College is reporting our region will be affected by a major arctic front starting Sunday afternoon.
According to a statement from NWS, temperatures will rapidly drop Monday with below-zero temperatures and minus-20 to minus-40-degree wind chill temperatures. Snow will also enter the area as the front approaches the region, possibly changing to rain and then back to snow through the evening, according to the report.
The NWS is advising
residents and businesses for low temperatures of minus-10 to minus-20 and minus-15 to minus-25-degree wind chill. The coldest periods are expected to be Monday night through Wednesday morning. Monday afternoon to Tuesday early morning the region could see a temperature drop of 30 to 40 degrees in less than 12 hours, according to the statement.
Hazardous road conditions are also expected Sunday and Sunday night. The statement warns residents that electric utility interruptions are likely and any unprotected or exposed waterlines could freeze.
