Home-crafter turns hobby into a local design business
LEWISTOWN – Candy Gruber discovered her talent for design when she began decorating her home, using a Cricut machine to create vinyl, primitive phrases to adhere to the wall. Soon friends began asking for her work and businesses started employing her for logo redesigns and production.
Now, what began as a hobby has grown into Gruber Designs, at 713 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, offering custom made signs, banners, racing graphics, shirts, decals and logos.
“It started really small, as something that I did at home,” Gruber said. “But when my designs started getting out there, it became bigger and bigger and so I decided to open a shop.”
Using a vinyl cutting machine, Gruber assembles each design layer by hand, working off customer consultations and preferences, to create a final product. Before anything is printed an email of the design is sent to the customer for final approval, she said.
“I don’t have any training, it just comes naturally,” Gruber said. “Having my own business is new to me, so I’m learning as I go, but I always take the time to make a quality product.”
Walk-in consultations are welcome during open hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Appointments can be made by calling 889-0637. For more information, or to see samples of Gruber’s work, visit the Gruber Designs Facebook page.
