Fire claims Burnham home

BURNHAM – Units from 10 Mifflin County fire departments battled a residential fire for nearly four hours Thursday afternoon in Burnham.

Around 3:11 p.m., an Emergency Response Scanner reported the blaze at 206 Third Avenue in Burnham, with flames showing. The residence was located behind the Burnham Fire Company, whose Chief Matt Harpster took command of the scene.

” We were able to make a quick stop on it,” Harpster said. “This helped keep the structure standing, at the very least.”

Harpster said he believes the fire started in the rear of the 208 side of the home, which the owners of 206 used as storage. The family was able to vacate the house safely, but as a unit the home was a total loss, Harpster said. The investigation is ongoing.

Harpster also said that Fame EMS was on hand at the fire station providing rehabilitation to those fighting the fire.

“Fame EMS did a wonderful job with the rehabilitation,” Harpster said. “Being able to use our fire house was beneficial to help keep the smoke away from those going through the rehabilitation.”

He also said other firehouse members were on hand providing hot food and beverages.

The fire was not cleared until 7:11 p.m.

Burnham Fire Company was assisted by units from Junction, Reedsville, Yeagertown, Belleville, Milroy, Mount Union and East Derry Fire companies; Highland Park Hose Company; United Fire and Rescue; Mifflin County Regional Police; and fire police from Burnham, Derry and Lewistown.

Additional fire companies from Centre, Snyder, and Juniata counties were placed on stand by while Mifflin County crews were fighting the blaze.
