2 waive preliminary hearings

MOUNT UNION – Two men who were charged recently with robbery after they held up the Nittany Minit Mart near Mount Union waived their right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.

Police said Dwayne Scott Smith, 19, of Mount Union, and Ridge Ryen Rhodes, 20, of McVeytown, were reported to have jumped the store counter and threatened the clerk with what he believed was a handgun just before midnight Friday at the Wayne Township convenience store.

Police said a review of the store’s video surveillance led investigators to a residence in Mount Union, where Smith and Rhodes were taken into custody.

Both defendants are expected to waive their formal arraignments in the Mifflin County Court of Common Pleas in the near future.

Smith was released from Mifflin County Correctional Facility Wednesday on bail but Rhodes remains incarcerated, according to online MCCF records.

Each man’s bail had been set at $35,000.
