Accident leaves one dead, another injured

MOUNT UNION – One woman died and a man sustained major injuries in a crash Tuesday on U.S. 522 at Lenape Drive in Shirley Township, Pennsylvania State Police Huntingdon report.

According to the report, Diane L. Cramer, 68, of Shirleysburg, was killed and John R. McGarvey, 66, of Shirleysburg, was left with major injuries after the two-vehicle accident, which occurred at 10:06 a.m.

Police said McGarvey, traveling on Lenape Drive in a 1994 Chevrolet truck, stopped at a stop sign then made a left turn onto U.S. 522, driving into the path of Cramer, who was traveling north in a 2005 Chrysler van.

According to the report, after impact, McGarvey’s vehicle was pushed across the southbound lane of U.S. 522 and came to rest along the berm facing south. Police said Cramer’s vehicle was spun in a counterclockwise direction and came to rest in the northbound lane facing southwest.

According to the report, both McGarvey and Cramer were transported from the scene by Mount Union Ambulance. Police said McGarvey was transported to Altoona Trauma Center and Cramer to J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon, where she was later pronounced dead.

McGarvey was reported in stable condition Thursday.

According to the report, both vehicles sustained severe damage in the crash. Police said neither driver was wearing a seat belt, and the crash closed U.S. 522 for about three and a half hours.

State police were assisted by Mount Union and Shirley Township fire departments and fire police personnel. The investigation is ongoing.
