Strike up the band
LEWISTOWN -The second annual Mifflin County Marching Band Reunion will be held during the Huskies Homecoming Game on Oct. 11. Anyone who has ever played in a high school band is invited to participate.
“We don’t care if you didn’t graduate from a local high school,” explains Jenny Barron Landis, who graduated from Lewistown Area High School in 1979.
“Part of why we’re doing this is to shine a light on the music programs in public schools. And the impact can be felt through generations.”
Jim Marker recently signed up to participate just so he could share the experience with his granddaughter, Laurie Everly, and his great-granddaughter, Taylor Everly. Jim will turn 80 next month and would have graduated from Lewistown High School in 1951 had he been able to complete his senior year. He learned to play both bass horn and bass drum while moving from high schools in Reedsville, Yeagertown and Lewistown. Jim also played in the Brooklyn Drum and Bugle Corp and while he’s not sure if he’ll be playing an instrument at the Homecoming Game, he does plan to be in the stands.
“Your level of participation is up to you,” explains Pauline Belfiore, who graduated from Lewistown Area High School in 1978. “This event is all-inclusive, so if you’d like to come but can’t march onto the field with us, you can meet us at the 50 yard line. If you’d like to attend but don’t want to play, that’s fine, too.”
The registration form for the reunion can be found on the Mifflin County School District’s website, under Alumni Reunion – www.mcsdk12.org . If you’re not on the Internet, please feel free to contact Jenny Landis at 248-8078 for a form. The cost is $20 per person and includes a limited edition T-shirt. Proceeds will be donated to the band. For ongoing updates, find the Mifflin County Marching Band Reunion on Facebook.
