Police: Driver flees, vehicle catches fire after Friday crash
McALISTERVILLE – A McAlisterville man’s vehicle caught fire after a Friday night accident in Fayette Township, from which the driver fled, Pennsylvania State Police Lewistown report.
Police said Dale E. Lightner, 31, of McAlisterville, was traveling north on Rockland Road in a 2008 Pontiac G6 at around 11:40 p.m. and was approaching a right curve in the roadway when he was distracted by the vehicle’s radio.
Lightner traveled across the southbound lane and skidded off the roadway into a utility pole on the western side of the roadway, police said. Lightner’s vehicle struck the pole with its driver’s side front bumper and then began to roll onto its passenger side and struck a nearby tree with its rear trunk, police said. The vehicle came to rest against a tree on its passenger side, according to the report.
Police said Lightner then fled the scene, after which the vehicle ignited into flames. The fire was extinguished by members of Fayette Township Fire Co.
According to the report, Lightner later admitted he fled the scene due to his license being suspended. Lightner will receive numerous traffic citations filed through Magisterial District Judge Barbara M. Lyter’s office. Lightner was not wearing a seat belt and received minor injuries, police said.
Fayette EMS also assisted at the scene.
