Church set to hold summer art classes
OAKLAND MILLS Art classes are being offered at Lost Creek Mennonite Church this summer, and they may serve as a “guiding light” to one’s interest in making a creative piece.
The courses, a drawing class for individuals ages 13 through adult and a children’s art class for ages 6 to 12, will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 22 and 23 at the church, 2682 Long Road, Mifflintown.
Registration is $5 for the two-day course and is due by July 20.
Judy Mummau, artist and photographer, and Donnie Martin, graduate of the Minneapolis School of Art, will be the instructors.
Martin will work with adults while Mummau teaches the child’s course.
Mummau said the courses were Martin’s idea.
“We have several artistic individuals who attend our church, and we wanted to encourage and support people from the community with an interest in art,” Mummau said.
Mummau, who taught art at Juniata Mennonite School for seven years, will be teaching children composition, shading, perspective and painting techniques. They will be creating a mixed media painting with the subject of lighthouses.
“Although classes will focus on completing their one painting, I will be showing photographs that will inspire children to see the beauty of God’s creation,” she said. “When we look at a sky with puffy clouds or sunset colors, we can see God’s artistic hand at work. Two of my main verses will be ‘The Lord will guide you always,’ Isaiah 58:11, and ‘The Lord is my light and my salvation,’ Psalm 27:1.”
Martin said he will not focus heavily on scripture with his teaching but rather focus on the projects themselves. The first evening, participants will sketch a cartoon character Martin has already made. The second night, they will create their own drawing.
“We just want to get the people (in the church). It’s really an outreach of the church,” he said.
“The class is for anyone, regardless of faith,” he said. “Anybody who has a desire to draw … to do pencil drawing.”
The classes will allow students to express their individuality, the teachers said.
Children can be creative in the summer course, Mummau said.
“After given guidance, children will have the chance to personalize their painting just the way they want it. Their lighthouse will be the shape and color they desire,” she said.
