Greenwood educator recognized

MILLERSTOWN – Greenwood High School teacher Krista Pontius was among a group of five teachers recognized by WGAL-TV and Rotary Club District 7390 as a recipient of a Teacher Impact Award.

A banquet was held in their honor Sunday at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey Hotel.

In addition to Pontius, Karen Gagliardi of George A. Smith Middle School, Sara Little of Hanover Senior High School, Barb Mellinger of Palmyra Area High School and Deborah Allen Wirth of North Salem Elementary School also received the award.

Each recipient was individually profiled in a videotaped vignette shown during the banquet. The vignettes will be broadcast during consecutive Friday “News 8 at 5” newscasts beginning May 17. Pontius’ vingnette will be shown June 7. All the profiles will be seen during a “Teacher Impact Awards” special set to be broadcast at 7 p.m. June 22 on WGAL-TV.

The Teacher Impact Awards honors teachers who have influenced students’ lives, both academically and personally. Nominations were solicited through broadcast messages on WGAL-TV, collected by the station and individually evaluated by a group of judges.

Teachers were selected based on the nomination form’s content, as submitted by students, parents and other educators.

Pontius was nominated by her colleague, Diane Cornman, who said, “… (Pontius) says her favorite part is listening to all the hopes and dreams of her own freshman on the bus ride home. She challenges them with the ‘So now you have it, what are you going to do with it?’ It is this understated joy and compassion that has made us all want to become better educators.”
