Kid Connection prepares for annual event
LEWISTOWN – Kid Connection is gearing up for its 31st annual event with the release of this year’s logo and T-shirt design, created by Alexis Forshey, sixth grader at Mifflin County Middle School.
The design features a large tree with extended roots encircled by the slogan which reads “Kid Connection: Where families and friends grow their roots.”
“We chose Alexis’ design because it really hit home for a lot of people,” said Candy Ciecierski, chair of Kid Connection. “We’re a small town and most of the businesses and people were born and raised here. The design communicates the type of connection we have in our communities.”
Alexis’ idea for Kid Connection began as a doodle one day after school, she said. When Alexis finished the drawing her mom was so impressed that she suggested Alexis enter it in the T-shirt contest.
“Most of the time I just start doodling and it turns into a picture with a story,” Alexis said. “I was proud of the drawing and decided to try it. I’m really excited, and a little nervous, that they picked my design.”
The image and logo will be featured on Kid Connection pamphlets, maps, schedules, and booth set-ups as well as the official T-shirt, available for sale during the event.
“A lot of the people involved have taken Alexis’ theme to heart and are planning activities based around it,” Ciecierski said. “One of the booths is having kids draw flowers and another has them planting seeds. A lot of people are excited about the concept.”
The 2013 Kid Connection is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 27, with a rain date of May 4, in downtown Lewistown. This year’s entertainment includes Samuel’s Church Kids in Christ Service, Miller’s Tae Kwon Do, Zumbatomic with TAZ Fitness, Star Karaoke, the Miss Central Pennsylvania Scholarship Pageant and Dancing with the Kid Connection Stars.
There will also be a variety of activities for children and families to enjoy including cookie decorating, the Tumblebus, an interactive animal exhibit from Lincoln Caverns and Shaver’s Creek, a bounce house and face painting.
“Kid Connection is a place where families can come together and learn about the community without the burden of any cost,” Ciecierski said. “The event is totally free and we work solely off donations. The event wouldn’t be possible without help from community volunteers and businesses.”
