Fundraisers set for March and April

BELLEVILLE – The 48th Annual Belleville Mennonite School Sale is set for April 19 to 20 at the school, located at 4105 Front Mountain Road in Belleville.

The school’s bi-annual cattle auction will precede the sale and will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Belleville Livestock Market.

Valerie Reed, BMS development director, said the annual sale is a long-standing tradition, first held in 1965 at the Belleville Livestock Barn. The first sale only featured donated dairy cattle. Over the years, the auction continued to grow and change venues to accommodate supporters, she said.

The traditional cattle auction is still held bi-annually and includes donated cattle, hoof trimming, breeding services and barn cleaning.

The annual auction features a greater variety of goods and services, from gift cards and food to vacations and game tickets.

A pork barbecue dinner will kick off this year’s event at 4 p.m. April 19. The gift certificate auction begins at 6 p.m., and the special feature gift certificate auction begins at 7:15 p.m. Kids’ activities will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The merchandise auction will begin at 8:30 a.m. April 20. The elementary letter donation and outdoor auctions will be held beginning at 11:30 p.m., and the handmade quilt auction will start at 1:30 p.m. Pictures of the quilts are available at www.bellevillemennoniteschool.org. Kids’ activities will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Breakfast and lunch will be available.

According to an event booklet, comfortable padded seats are available at the front of the gymnasium and can be reserved for $10 each. Seats will be reserved for both days of the annual auction.

“We are very thankful for all of the individuals and businesses who make the auction possible, from the ladies who make the handmade quilts to the area farmers and agribusinessmen who donate dairy cattle and services, the area businesses who donate auction items and the individuals who come every year to buy these items,” Reed said, adding that there are many volunteers behind the scenes who ensure that the event runs smoothly. “…God has truly blessed this event and school by allowing people to faithfully support it.”

Reed said proceeds from the auction are used for instructional materials, student services and technology.
