Board supports new boat launch
LEWISTOWN – Mifflin County is officially lending its support for a proposed boat launch to be constructed along the Juniata River near McVeytown.
During their regular business meeting on Thursday, the Mifflin County Commissioners approved a request by County Planning Director Bill Gomes to allocate $15,000 of the county’s Marcellus Shale Legacy Funds to assist in the development of a boat launch in Bratton Township.
In February, Gomes said his department plans to apply for two grants, one from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and one from the Natural Resources and the Chesapeake Bay and Watertrails Network that would total $201,027, which would cover construction costs. The additional $15,000 would be the county’s matching funds, Gomes said, which would go toward surveying, easement and other legal requirements.
In a related matter, the commissioners also approved a proposal from Axis Professional Surveying of Mifflintown to conduct additional survey work on the site.
“They did some original work for us for free that provided us with a footprint,” Gomes explained. “But now we need more detailed survey work that will have a cost associated with it.”
