Hearing waived in theft case

PORT ROYAL – A Port Royal woman charged with theft and forgery recently waived her right to a preliminary hearing at Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline Leister’s office.

Leilani Jo Ewell is alleged to have forged signatures of the members of the Port Royal Little League Association. Eweill is the former treasurer of the association and is alleged to have diverted nearly $1,000 for her own personal use.

Members of the association confronted Ewell and requested receipts, which she refused to provide, police said.

Police said Ewell admitted to using the money to pay for an electric bill and to pay fines from a recent DUI conviction.

Ewell remains free on unsecured bail. A formal arraignment date has not been scheduled.
