Board honors volunteer

MIFFLINTOWN – There are minor jobs within local government that are critical to community operations but not often recognized, said Juniata County Commissioner Robert Reynolds at a public board meeting held Tuesday in Mifflintown.

The board of commissioners recognized Jim Thompson for his years of service on the Juniata County Planning Commission. Planning Director Dave Bardell said Thompson began his term on Jan. 1, 1977, and has served the commission continuously for 36 years and two months. Bardell said Thompson served with nearly perfect attendance and his dedication to the position went above and beyond usual public service.

“Words cannot describe how much that means to our board of commissioners,” Commissioner Teresa O’Neal said.

The board approved the appointment of Marian Casner to fill the vacancy left by Thompson for a four-year term. Casner’s term will retroactively begin Jan. 1 and will expire on Dec. 31, 2016.

Also during Tuesday’s public meeting, the commissioners:

Ratified Juniata County Hazardous Materials check No. 1,150 in the amount of $463.38 to New Pig Corporation for absorbent material.

Approved performance evaluation reports for Robyn Ventresca, LO360 fiscal assistant local government, and Karen Imes, caseworker 2, as submitted by Helen Henry, children and youth director.

Approved checks Nos. 36,995 to 37,027 in the amount of $162,233.34.
