Pedestrian dies in morning accident

LEWISTOWN – An early morning tragedy Wednesday along South Main Street in Lewistown left one person dead, Lewistown Police Department reports.

According to a press release from police, Parveen Mahajan, 50, was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Kevin Walter, 43, of Milroy, at 5:15 a.m. along South Main Street.

Mahajan was pronounced dead at the scene by Mifflin County Coroner Daniel Lynch. The cause of death was blunt force trauma, according to the coroner’s report.

LPD Chief Bill Herkert said the investigation is continuing and charges have not been filed at this time. Any potential charges will be based on statements from witnesses and evidence gathered by the officers at the scene, Herkert said.

“We are trying to determine what occurred.” Herkert said, “We are interviewing witnesses and officers are conducting a reconstruction of the accident scene.”

Police were assisted at the scene by Fame EMS, Brooklyn Hose Co. and Lewistown Fire Police.
