Commissioners honor Eagle Scouts

LEWISTOWN – The Mifflin County Commissioners on Thursday honored four local Boy Scouts for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Honored through proclamations were Benjamin Michael Hain, Jacob William Larson, Louis Andres Jerzerick and Curtis Felipe Jerzerick.

Hain, with the help of other scouts, family and friends, chose as his Eagle Scout project cleaning and repainting the Mifflin County High School baseball field dugouts with the new school colors. His leadership positions in scouting include senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader and historian.

Larson’s project was to renovate the front porch at Malta Home Retirement Center. With the help of family, friends and fellow scouts, he painted the porch, installed flower boxes, landscaped around the sides of the porch, installed a new light and purchased a bench and bird house through contributions and fundraisers. His scouting leadership positions include patrol leader and assistant patrol leader.

Louis Jerzerick’s project consisted of repainting and making repairs to the concession stands at Mitchell Field in Lewistown. With the help of fellow scouts, family, the Husky Club and the school district’s maintenance department, he was able to repair the roof on the stand, make repairs inside the stand and paint both stands Husky purple. His scouting leadership positions include senior patrol leader, quartermaster and librarian.

Curtis Jerzerick’s project was repainting the ticket booths and replacing old sections of wooden bleachers with aluminum at Mitchell Field in Lewistown. With help from family, the Mifflin County Probation Department and members of the football team and one the football coaches, he was able to complete the project, which was funded by the Husky Club and the school district’s maintenance department. His scouting leadership positions include patrol leader, assistant patrol leader and patrol scribe.

In other business Thursday, the commissioners:

Accepted Mifflin County’s Victims of Juvenile Offenders grant for July 31-Dec. 31, 2012 in the amount of $4,766.

Accepted Mifflin County’s Rights and Services Act grant for Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2013 in the amount of $53,228. That money is used for the victim witness program, the commissioners said.

Approved the 2013 Tax Claim Bureau fees, which are the same as 2012.

Approved a request by Kistler Borough for its 2012 Liquid Fuels allocation in the amount of $1,000.

Approved a resolution terminating a long-standing lease for $1 on a parcel of land that had been designated as an aircraft spotter location in the 1950s. That parcel of land is being sold by its owners, the commissioners said.

Approved a one-year renewal of water management services for the HVAC systems at the courthouse ($2,800) and the correctional facility ($900) with Rochester Midland Corporation of Randleman, N.C. The commissioners noted those prices are the same as in 2012.

Reappointed Robert W. Bowman and Carl N. Hartley, both of Lewistown, to two-year terms on the Mifflin County Solid Waste Authority.

Promoted Morgan Miller from part-time to full-time corrections officer effective Feb. 3.
