SELINSGROVE — The Foster Grandparent Program of Central PA held its annual luncheon on June 21 for its volunteers, which recognized 90 volunteers from the Susquehanna Valley and surrounding areas for their service as foster grandparents.

For the 2016-2017 year, 30 volunteers were noted and received awards for completing their first, third, fifth,10th, 15th or 20th year of service.

Jane Korbich, of Sunbury, and Robert Roth, of Sunbury, both received citations for serving as foster grandparents for 15 years.

Glenn Maneval, of Port Trevorton, celebrated his 20th year.

The citations were presented by Martha Milbrand, representing State Sen. John Gordner’s office, Kirsten Zechman, representing State Rep. Fred Keller’s office, and Amy Badorf, representing State Rep. Linda Schlegel-Culver’s office.

Additionally, Snyder County Commissioners Peggy Chamberlain and Malcolm Derk attended and acknowledged their gratitude for the community contributions foster grandparents make.

There were 16 volunteers who joined the program during the 2016-2017 year from Union, Snyder, Northumberland and Juniata counties. They were awarded new member pins in appreciation of their commitment. Three of the new members began their foster grandparent careers in two new sites in Juniata County. Monroe Elementary in Richfield had two foster grandparents for this past school year, and Tuscarora Valley Elementary in Port Royal had one foster grandparent.

The Foster Grandparent Program is for men and women 55 and older who love kids and are looking for an opportunity to volunteer. Foster grandparents volunteer with children in daycares, schools, head start programs and alternative education programs. They are mentors for the children and provide additional support

to the classroom. They

serve between 15 and 40 hours per week, based on a schedule that meets the volunteer’s needs.

Volunteers receive an hourly stipend, and help with transportation and meals while serving.
