MIFFLINTOWN — After eight years as a grooming industry employee, Sara Flickenger said she wanted to open her own pet salon in Mifflintown.

“There are so many different ideas I wanted to put to use,” Flickenger said.

Flickenger Paws & Claws opened in March, in the building next to the drive-in movie theater on the William Penn Highway.

“We’re conveniently located off of the Arch Rock road exit,” Flickenger said.

Open by appointment only, Paws & Claws offers various bathing options, such as flea-dips, de-skunking or mud baths and all aspects of pet grooming, including trimming and polishing nails. Paws & Claws also offers teeth brushing, anal gland expressions and ear cleaning and plucking.

Flickenger has certification in grooming, pet CPR and pet first aide, and passed the American Kennel Club “Safety in the Salon” course. Flickenger also regularly attends grooming seminars and expos to keep up to date on techniques and information.

“I never stop learning,” Flickenger said.

Flickenger said the best part of her job is “getting to meet dogs and cats and love on them.” The hardest part is when her furry customers eventually pass away.

“I treat my clients’ (pets) like my own,” Flickenger said.

Flickenger Paws & Claws is still accepting new clients. For more information, “like” it on Facebook or call (717) 275-4904.
