Don Walters, of Alfarata, is offering portable sawmill services to the area to help make wood into something useful that may otherwise go to waste.

LEWISTOWN — Meadow View Millworks, of Alfarata, is now offering portable sawmilling services.

Frustrated by the low quality and quantity of local hardwood available, Owner Don Walters purchased a bandsaw mill to provide lumber for his own woodworking hobby, where he makes custom turned and flat projects.

“I had to get somebody else to cut it for me and now it’s easier to do it myself,” Walters said.

Since owning the portable mill and seeing the lack of other portable mills in the area, he decided to share its abilities with the community.

The portable sawmill can be used on wood that would otherwise go to waste. Walters said if someone has a fallen tree in their yard from a recent storm or a tree that has sentimental value, he can cut the tree into usable boards to be used to make furniture.

Whether it’s one tree or 100 trees, Walters charges a $25 setup fee and 20 cents per foot cut. He can cut any species of log up to 3 feet in diameter and 17 feet long.

“With a bandsaw mill, you get more yield because it makes less waste and more boards,” Walters said.

With the mill, Walters can offer custom cutting options including live edge boards, cutting slabs up to 8 inches thick or cutting dimensional lumber for building projects. He is also working on building up stock in various types of lumber, with the hopes of selling it to the public some day.

Located at 481 Alfarata Road, the sawmill service is available by appointment only.
