Tropitan gets new owner

LEWISTOWN – Tropitan, a tanning salon located at the rear of 331 Electric Ave., Lewistown, is under new ownership.

Dee Lucas, of Burnham, purchased the business from previous owner Jen Armstrong on April 2. Lucas had worked for Armstrong for eight months and began devoting more time to the business during the course of her employment. Eventually, she approached Armstrong about buying it and Armstrong agreed the timing was right.

“I tanned myself for years,” Lucas said.

Between that and her on-the-job experience, Lucas said she learned what she needed to know about running the business before purchasing it.

Lucas describes the business as clean, colorful and relaxing. Tropitan has five tanning beds: three 20-minute beds, one 30-minute bed and one 14-minute bed. After purchasing the business, Lucas upgraded the beds with new bulbs and acrylic.

The price of a tanning session depends on the length of time one wishes to spend in the tanning bed. The 20- and 14-minute sessions are $5 each, while a 30-minute session is $6.

Lucas said clients who have not tanned in several months have the option of purchasing four half-tans for the price of two visits. For example, someone who has not tanned since last fall could purchase a 20-minute session for $5 and split it into two 10-minute visits.

“I don’t want them to burn,” Lucas said.

Lucas gives direction and aid to patrons, but it is up to them to follow the recommendations. Each client is asked to sign a waiver during their first visit, indicating their understanding of Tropitan’s guidelines.

While some tanning salons ask patrons to wipe down the beds when they are finished, Lucas and her two employees handle the cleaning themselves.

Walk-in patrons are welcome at Tropitan, but anyone wishing to make an appointment can do so by calling 248-2808.

Tropitan is open from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Fridays and 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays. The tanning salon is closed on Sundays.
