Giant Food Stores takes peppercorns off shelves
CARLISLE – After a recall by Frontier Natural Products Co-Op, Giant Food Stores have removed select varieties of organic peppercorns from shelves due to potential Salmonella contamination.
The following products are included in this recall:
Frontier Peppercorns Black Whole organic, 2.12 ounces, UPC 8983618435, lot codes 3246 and 3288
Simply Organic Black Pepper Whole organic, 2.65 ounces, UPC 8983618524, lot codes 3221 and 3262
Giant Food Stores has received no reports of illnesses to date. Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and people with HIV or who are undergoing chemotherapy.
The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional effects may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.
Customers who have purchased the product should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to Giant for a full refund.
