Shade Mountain Naturals introduces all-natural skin care line
LEWISTOWN – Though Tamela Hetrick’s interest in all natural body products began as a side hobby to her massage company, Shade Mountain Naturals, she now has a full product line of natural and handmade soaps, lotions, moisturizers, scrubs and balms available in the company’s new retail space.
“As a massage therapist, I was instinctively drawn to natural skin care,” Hetrick said. “I started about five years ago, making a cream for my daughter’s eczema. All the commercial products seemed to inflame the problem, so I decided to create my own.”
After researching generic skin care products, their contents and the adverse effects they may have, she began developing natural soap and lotion recipes to use at home and on massage clients.
“I have seen firsthand how my clients’ skin absorbs the oils prepared for them,” Hetrick said. “To know that your body is absorbing 60 to 80 percent of what you put on it, and that it might not be healthy, is shocking.”
Then, in November, after years of research and development, Hetrick opened Shade Mountain Naturals’ new retail space, featuring more than 10 skin care lines for clients and customers to choose from, including vinotherapy and Himalayan salt merchandise. Each product is made by hand with essential oils and natural ingredients.
“We don’t use any fragrance oils because a lot of people have allergic skin reactions to it,” Hetrick said. “Instead of water, which makes up 80 to 90 percent of commercial products, we use organic aloe vera juice, which makes the soap last longer.”
For the Christmas season, Hetrick has created a number of holiday themed scents, like crushed cranberry, candy cane and silent night, available in a variety of product types. Classic fragrances available all year long, include scents like mocha joe, bay rum, cheerful, cool mint tea and wild wild west.
