PRN Medical Staffing expands training facility

LEWISTOWN – PRN Medical Staffing, in Lewistown, has expanded within its current location to include a hands-on education and training facility for more than 100 caregivers and employees.

In 2010, the company moved to the 7 Ort Valley Road location and has since outgrown the space over the past few years as the number of employees and case counts continue to grow, said Bill Sowich, co-owner of PRN.

“We have somewhere around 115 caregivers and 130 local cases,” Sowich said. “We finished the remaining building space and created a training center for our employees. It allows us to provide a hands-on training experience that we can monitor.”

The center is set-up like a classroom with a television for training videos and desks for the testing required after each unit, said Maureen Hoffman, caregiver supervisor at PRN. The center also includes a hospital bed and hoyer-lift for caregivers to practice specific healthcare situations, she added.

“It’s very important that we provide a level of training that matches the level of need a consumer may have,” Hoffman said. “The better the training, the better the care we provide. That’s what we’re striving for.”

PRN Medical Staffing has been serving the community since 2005 when it began as a “hole in the wall on Water Street,” Sowich said. In the beginning, the company focused on supplementing medical staff for area nursing facilities. PRN would hire local nurses and caregivers, contracting them out to area nursing homes, Sowich said.

“Though staffing services made-up the majority of our company, as the times have changed and the business has changed, our focus is now on personal in-home care,” Sowich said. “We work to match caregivers with local consumers, usually seniors, to provide assistance that allows the consumer to remain in the home.”

Services include bathing, dressing and grooming, daily housekeeping and laundry, companionship, light household chores, meal preparation, assistance with transferring and walking, transportation to and from medical appointments and supervision with in-house activities and outings.

“I start with a consumer visit to design a care plan based on their needs and what they’re looking for in assistance,” Hoffman said. “Then I match the case with one of our caregivers. The goal is to create a match that works and remains consistent.”
